so i got this bird a little bit after xmas, and well... it still doesn't have a name. mainly because we can't come up w/a good one that fits it's personality. gomer was so easy to name because that name just fit his personality... this bird is much more timid, shy, observant, and quiet. we still aren't sure if it's going to be a boy or a girl, so i want to give it a nongender specific name. any ideas? i was thinking eduardo, but that won't really work if it turns out to be a girl. HELP ME PLEASE!!

Re:

lol... that might be a bit tricky... cause gomer can say his name, i think it might be kinda difficult to get this bird to say "pliny the elder" or "popsicle head" but the brain might work....

Re:

pinky and the brain.... that might work.. but you'd have to change the other's name also

I would still go with pliny the elder

or big poppa.. a bird could totally say that

How can you tell if a budgie is a male or a female? I heard once that you could tell by the colour of that fleshy part above their beak. Is that true? :))

Posted by: dissolves instantly (sahrie)
Posted at: February 19th, 2002 09:04 pm (UTC)

ya, actually that is true. that little fleshy part above their beak (it's kinda their nose) is called a "cere" and once a budgie is about 6 months old (i think... if my memory serves me correctly) that cere will have changed color from a blueish-white to either a purply-brown, indicating female, or blue, indicating male. right now this birds cere is still in the white-blue phase, but i have a feeling it's gonna be a boy anyway...

u have any name ideas?

after reading this post, I ran to get my pokemon towel out of the washer. You see, it lists all the pokemon....so I was trying to look for a bird pokemon....

All I got was lots of soap all over me. Tommorrow though, I will try again, when it's dry.

I named my hermit crab Kuboto after a crab pokemon:)

when i had this problem, i asked a good friend, and promised i'd name it when he chose. hence i had hrothgar (from beowulf) and cheeseburger (from.. er.. cows) the birds.

Re:

he won't? ohmygosh, this bird is still rather shy, and doesn't like to sit on your finger, it would rather sit on your shoulder, but my other bird gomer, he's the most friendly bird i've ever met. he's so rad... he talks too!! is your bird a budgie too?

Re:

i am SO beyond jealous. no, my birdie's a parakeet. and i have two of them, so they're excessively antisocial. kamikaze (corona's sib) used to be good about being held, but now they both just run and hide. they're so skittish!

Re:

parakeet = budgie.. actually the correct name for them is budgerie... i think it means tasty in aborigine.. or something like that, i dunno, someone told me that...

hrm. if you got them both at the same time that might explain why they are antisocial.. i got gomer over a year ago, and raised him myself, but this new one is getting exposure to gomer and is becoming the antisocial one... i'm now focusing on giving it individual attention.. little by littleparakeet = budgie.. actually the correct name for them is budgerie... i think it means tasty in aborigine.. or something like that, i dunno, someone told me that...

Re:

ahh, gotcha. i originally planned to get one, but then i couldn't resist. i'm not home a lot, and i thought they could keep each other company when i wasn't around... but then they started fighting back when we played training-type games. at their vet visit, they bit the doctor (who i didn't like either) and went absolutely nuts... it was so funny. :)

i really wanna get another baby one and get him all cute and trained-like. it might have to wait until i get my own apartment, though...

Re:

ya, when i was living on my own it was great cause i would just let my bird fly around, he was out of his cage all the time when i was home, but here (at my parents house) there are lots of people coming in and out and lots of plants for him to eat, so i have to watch him more closely now...::shrug::.. oh well, he's still hella cute!

i really wanna get a bigger parrot... but that's a lot of money and upkeep... i don't think i have the facilities for that just yet...

Re:

ooh, how cute. i definitely want a new baby so he can be all obedient and stuff. although i think the bad attitude of these two definitely came from their mom. :)

the bigger birds are SO crazy expensive. the pet store's had the same huge parrot on sale for $1,000 as long as i can remember... i feel horrible for it, no one can afford to love it. and the cage too is absolutely huge... i have enough trouble keeping the little ones clean.

i used to have lovebirds. they were gorgeous. and then i had cockatiels. they were so adorable! my godmother raised them from eggs, so they were completely social. but we had to give them away because (1) my mom was allergic and (2) they kept flying and crashing into the mirrors lining our living room.
